ModCell® is one of the first products to make large-scale, carbon-negative building a commercial reality. The ModCell® system utilises the excellent thermal insulation qualities of straw bale and hemp construction to form prefabricated panels, made in a local Flying Factory™.

ModCell is the ‘spin off’ company of a Bath University led research project (the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials)

Given that concrete alone accounts for around 10% of worldwide GHG emissions, using straw and hemp as alternative building materials is becoming a more and more attractive and widespread idea. A ModCell wall can have up to triple the current regulations insulation value, and ‘locks away’ nearly 1.5 tonnes of atmospheric carbon.

The BaleHaus is the standalone concept (as featured on Grand Designs), and Euro-Cell is the European funded R&D programme to further test, certify and roll out similar products and designs. Case studies, and brochure downloads over here.

There are also some great FAQs which answer common questions about this, and other strawbale techniques.

Do you like swanky modern straw buildings? Or rustic old school straw buildings? Don’t forget to subscribe for updates, either way!
