The Global Village Construction Set (GVCS) is an open technological platform that allows for the easy fabrication of the 50 different Industrial Machines that it takes to build a small civilization with modern comforts. Recently acknowledged by the White House, no less.
This short video gives you a good introduction and demonstrates some of the machines in action.
This is a very exciting and wide-ranging project, and there is plenty for you to get stuck into once you start browsing around. Very ambitious, so of course much of the whole construction set is not ‘complete’; or to be more specific, it is under permanent beta.
The system has been designed from the ground up to be affordable and interchangable. For example, the ‘Hydraulic power cube’ (currently at its 7th version) is designed with the relevant quick release plates and hoses to allow one cube to be used in a sawmill one day and a tractor the next. Or it can be linked with other cubes to increase the power available. Did someone say grown up LEGO? (You’re never too old to enjoy LEGO in my opinion) What about a ‘Multimachine’? One machine that drills, saws, grinds and sands? (Starting to sound like a TV salesperson here)
In keeping with the open-source philosophy, the place you really want to check out is the associated wiki.
Marcin Jakubowski’s (with a Phd in Fusion Physics that he called ‘useless’) TED talk on the topic is here
Or you can watch them building their ‘HabLab’ here
Just to clarify Open Source Ecology is the ‘parent’ of GVCS:
“The Open Source Ecology Paradigm is an idea that the open source economy is a route to human prosperity in harmony with natural life support systems.”
